万博をやるのであれば、人類が直面する諸問題に対して世界中の英知を結集してこう取り組んでいます、取り組んでいきますというのを示す場であって欲しいという思いがあって、コストを沢山かけて美味いものを作りましたみたいな道楽物産展であって欲しくない。ただ、これはあくまで勝手な願望に過ぎなくて、万博条約とかでも別に万博の目的はそういうものではないとしている。

「博覧会とは、名称のいかんを問わず、公衆の教育を主たる目的とする催しであって、文明の必要とするものに応ずるために人類が利用することのできる手段又は人類の活動の一若しくは二以上の部門において達成された進歩若しくはそれらの部門における将来の展望を示すものをいう。」
